Looking Ahead To Royal Ascot

Meetings

It’s one of the most eagerly anticipated events in the flat racing calendar – Royal Ascot captures the hearts of many and it’s certainly something that I look forward to!

There have been so many memorable ones over the years – I personally remember when the festival came to York – living there at the time, it was a great event and so exciting to be in amongst the atmosphere.

While it is maybe still too early to call any races, most of them already have runners that have been entered and despite it still being a good few weeks away, there may already be a few that stand out and have a good chance.

With that in mind, I’ve gone through a few of the races as it stands and picked out a couple of potential horses that I like that could get at least a place!

Coronation Stakes

A race that always attracts a considerable following, the Coronation Stakes this year, I think will have a similar buzz about it. There are a few that catch eye, not least of whom, Porta Fortuna who finished second in the 1,000 Guineas and also has won the Cheveley Park Stakes.

Demonstrating strong finishing ability, the filly also handles firm ground very well and in trainer Donnacha O’Biren, I think she is certainly in great hands. Others that could make an impact on this race, I think include Elmalka and Opera Singer.

Queen Elizabeth II Jubilee Stakes

I’ve seen this get heightened interest over the last few years and there have been some great runs recently. One that stands out for me in this is Mill Stream. Having won the Group 2 Duke of York Stakes, he completely dominated in impressive style. He keeps on improving as well and tends to perform well on a straight six furlong track, while consistently looking sharp with his footwork.

I think Shartash is maybe another one to watch as well who got back to form in 2024 with two wins, though it will be interesting to see how he handles himself in an elite field.

King Charles III Stakes

Always an interesting race, one that stands out for me this year, is the Australian filly Benedetta who I think has demonstrated progressive improvement over the last year while also getting a Group 1 win under her saddle.

Trainer Jason Warren will have been putting her through her paces over the last few months and I certainly think she is one to watch.

King George VI & Queen Elizabeth Stakes

For me, this could be a cert, after Desert Hero swept home last year for owner King Charles III and Queen Camilla and in trainer William Haggas, he is in good hands. For me, no other really comes close and he could well make a consecutive success.

Ascot Gold Cup

The big one and usually the highlight of the week, the Ascot Gold Cup always generates excitement. One that stands out the most for me is Kyprios under respected trainer Aidan O’Brien and has lost just two times in his last 15 outings.

Likely to be very short odds, but I just can’t see past him. Maybe there could be decent value in backing Gregory each way, but either way, it should be a cracking race!
